Terry and I started the Southwest Journal in 1990 in our basement, never dreaming that the business would grow to include four publications. We have a wonderful staff and we all pride ourselves on providing outstanding news and information coverage for our readers. As for me, I'm an old-house nut with the 1916 arts and crafts home to prove it. I share the house with husband Terry, 18-year-old daughter Zoe, a field spaniel named Django, another named Emmet, Spike the bengal cat, and large piles of reading material.
Job duties include the following: Strategic thinking and bottle-washing.
Contact Terry if you want to sell us stuff.
I like the newspaper business. It’s fun working with business and community leaders who recognize our contribution to the community. I also enjoy time with my family, and I fly small airplanes and play jazz piano whenever I can.

Before becoming editor, I worked as a reporter on a variety of beats for the Journals. I also worked for The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal and The Journal Inquirer in Manchester, Conn. Before those jobs, I interned for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Duluth News Tribune and the Star Tribune’s Washington, D.C. bureau. Besides journalism, I’m into long-distance running and kayaking in the summers, and on occasion, making bundt cakes.
Job duties include the following: managing advertising sales for all publications.
Contact Melissa if you’re looking to find out more about advertising or sponsorship opportunities in any of our publications.
As a fourth-generation graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in marketing and youth studies, I’ve always been passionate about working with people. In my free time, I enjoy golfing, hanging out with family and friends, and taking advantage of Minneapolis’s many lakes – weather permitting! I currently reside in Edina with my husband and two children.
Job duties include the following: being in charge of billing and receiving, accounts payable and human resources.
Contact Chris with any questions you might have about MPP’s acounting.
I came to MPP after a career in aviation, most recently piloting the Avro Jet for Mesaba Airlines. Although my desk currently does not fly, working at MPP has been just as exciting.
Job duties include ensuring the timely publication of all print products, with a keen eye toward beautiful typography and compelling graphics; and directing a talented staff of designers, photographers and interns. I am also interim editor for Minnesota Parent magazine and Minnesota Good Age.
Contact me about anything related to how all of the MPP newspapers and magazines look.
My career in publishing has taken me on bog walks in northern Minnesota, tracking radio-collared wolves; to Italy to cover the latest furniture trends; to New York to launch a magazine; and to my home office, where I authored four books and designed many more. I’m a multi-tasker at heart and in my free time I like to listen to live music, ride my bike, pretend that I like to garden, read good books and create mayhem.
Job duties include the following: Managing a force of 50 carriers and drivers to ensure timely and accurate distribution of our publications.
Marlo should be contacted by people looking to do the following with MPP: Having a complaint or question regarding delivery or availability of our publications. Also, if you’re looking for employment delivering our publications or you’d like your business to distribute an MPP publication, contact Marlo.
I was born and raised in Minneapolis and remember taking field trips to the Foshay Tower, which at the time was the tallest building Downtown. Most of my “free time” centers around my two kids and their sports.
Job duties include the following: Reporting on Southwest neighborhoods, development, crime and business, overseeing the intern program for the Southwest Journal and Downtown Journal.
Feel free to contact Jake with any story ideas regarding Southwest neighborhood issues, development, crime, or business.
I live in the Armatage neighborhood with my wife, Allison, and our two feisty dachshunds, Lola and Bella.

I have recently returned to Minneapolis after a three-and-a-half-year stint writing for my hometown newspaper, The Free Press of Mankato. You might see me riding my bike around the Uptown area, sometimes with a bag of groceries balanced on one knee (it takes practice). I like to see live music and check out new restaurants, but when I’m not out and about, I’m usually reading or trying to put a dent in my ever-growing Netflix queue.
Job duties include the following: writing features for the Downtown Journal and reporting on community and development news in the Loring Park, Downtown, Elliot Park, Nicollet Island/East Bank and North Loop neighborhoods.
Gregory is the person to contact with Downtown news tips--or if someone wants to build a condo in your back yard.
Having spent three years writing about the local art scene for Vita.mn, Star Tribune, and METRO Magazine, I'm thrilled to leave freelancing behind and settle in as a staff writer at MPP. When I'm not banging out caffeine-fueled copy, I like to settle my mind with yoga, the New Yorker, and loud, abrasive rock music.
Job duties include the following: Reporting on Southwest neighborhoods, business development and public safety.
Feel free to contact me with any news tips, story ideas or input on the coverage of the Southwest area.
I recently returned to Minnesota after spending the past two years in Wisconsin, reporting for the Wausau Daily Herald and interning at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I covered city government and environmental issues in Wausau and received awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for investigative and environmental reporting.
I live in the Crocus Hill neighborhood of St. Paul. I enjoy reading, camping and following the Minnesota Twins. On warm days you can find me canoeing on one of the Southwest lakes.
Job duties include the following: Spreading the word about MPP.
Contact Kyle about advertising in any of our four publications.
I went to Bethel University, where I studied organizational leadership. I’m a die-hard Minnesota sports fan. I try to get outside and enjoy all four seasons in Minnesota.
I design the editorial content for the Downtown and Southwest Journals. I do my best to make the Journals as navigable and easy-to-use as possible and to make every story visually appealing and easy to understand. I also try to throw around the terms "charticle" and "infographic" as often as possible.
On the weekends, I enjoy spending time with my wife Heidi, son Kipton (born in December) and pooch Jovie. During the fall and winter it's all about watching the Vikings and keeping an eye on my fantasy football team. During the spring and summer it's either golfing or heading north to the cabin.
Job duties include the following: Trafficking ads and ad client support.
Contact Kate if you want to send in ad materials.
A true Minnesota girl, I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in marketing. Going to the lake in the summer sometimes feels like my second job. When I’m not playing volleyball, I’m telling it like it is.
Job duties include: creating new ads, checking submitted ads for quality issues, placing ads in the Downtown Journal, and quality control for newly created ads.
Contact Valerie with questions about designing ads: image resolution, file format, color mode, etc.
Although I live in Downtown, I have to admit that Mankato will always be “home.” A few years after high school, I stared into a campfire in South Dakota and decided to go to art school. Less than two months later, I was a graphic design major at The Art Institutes International Minnesota. While attending AI Minnesota, I worked at TGI Friday’s, which is where I met my husband. Yes, I wore flair… and I liked it!
Job duties include ad sales for all publications with an emphasis on Minnesota Parent and Minnesota Good Age.
Contact Teri if you'd like to know more about reaching the baby boomer market and/or families with young children.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, camping and home improvement projects. I LOVE music and even though I can't carry a tune, I know all the words to an awful lot of songs.
I live in Golden Valley with my best friend, Dave, the two greatest boys in the world, Collin and Galen, a very noisy Sheltie named Copper and our cat, Gypsy.

Job duties include the following: taking photos, editing photos, working with freelancers for MPP’s four publications. Award winning photographs
Personal info: I enjoy spending time with my wife Erin, dog Elle and cat Kuro during my time off. I like going to our lake house up north with my wife, and enjoy going out to expensive restaurants with her for dinner and a couple of bottles of wine.
Job duties include rolling over for belly rubs and finding secret places to pee.
Contact Emmet for advice on how to be a really cute puppy.
Like Django, I'm from Saratoga Springs, New York. I spend most of my days sleeping, but occasionally get up to find treats and beg for attention. I hear that I'm a pretty sweet guy, and judging by the way the women around here look at me, I think I'm pretty cute, too. I'm learning how to walk on a leash and spend a lot of time watching Django's butt. He's a good big brother.
By the way, I don't faint every time I see Django, but he's a great role model for the second best guitar-playing dog in the world.
Job duties include the following: Company mascot, stress reliever.
Contact Django for a dog’s perspective on the news of the day.
I’m originally from Saratoga Springs, New York, but I’ve lived in Minneapolis for most of my life, which is tough as I prefer a warmer climate. ‘Seek the sunspot’ is my motto. I spend as much time as possible in one of the city’s wonderful dog parks playing my favorite game of ball, with my own modifications: Chase the ball, bring it back, dig a hole, put the ball in the hole, lie down in the hole. What a great game. It just cracks everyone up.
Anyway, the best part of working at MPP is the attention. I get more strokes from the folks around here than I know what to do with. Sometimes I have to remind people that I need my 18 hours of sleep a day.
Okay, back to bed for me.
